Who is writing Intelligences?

I’m Laure, a social entrepreneur, founder of Nyki (www.nyki.lu), and happy private tutor ever since I launched my company, more than 6 years ago.

Nyki is reducing social inequalities by making school tutoring accessible to all children. By adapting our prices to family income, with discounts from 10% to 100% on all our standard prices, we are making sure no one is left behind when it comes to getting the school support they need.

Having taught more than 2500 hours of tutoring myself, I have noticed patterns about some things that work, and some things that don’t.

I have also observed how school can affect, negatively but also positively, the relationship between a child and their parents.

I have learned huge lessons regarding teaching, and learning.

Sharing them with you is the whole purpose of Intelligences.

Let’s grow together.

Intelligences is not just meant to be a newsletter: it’s meant to be a safe space to learn and grow together.

Because all the lessons learned I will share here, I didn’t learn all on my own: I learned them with my students. Your children, maybe. They definitely made me develop my Intelligences.

And believing their feedback, I helped them become their Intelligences too. Often so with an unconventional approach, which I am eager to share with you.

Ok, but more Intelligences how? And when?

Every other week, on Sundays, let’s dive into another part of our Intelligences.

Is that person smarter than me? How?

Am I smarter than that same person? How?

Being ‘intelligent’ is such a common goal, and yet nobody knows how to define it precisely.

Are we talking about logical reasoning and problem-solving? Critical thinking? Emotional intelligence? Self-awareness? The ability to learn? The ability to convince others? Something else?

Is someone who is ‘good’ in one of these necessarily good in the others? Of course not.

Is someone who is ‘bad’ in one of these, ‘bad’ forever at it? Of course not.

‘Intelligence’ is such a commonly used concept, and yet such poorly defined in our everyday vocabulary: it’s time we give it another scope. Which might start by making it plural.

Here, you will not find…

  • Any pseudoscience. I do not hold specific educational beliefs that I am trying to convince you to adopt. My educational background is not impregnated with one specific approach that I firmly believe in. My experience is not limited to one type of school that I think is perfect, or terrible. My income does not depend on any well-renown name, that became a brand, that I would fight for. I am curious and constantly learning about them, while also having a critical approach to their limitations, which I look forward to discussing with you.

  • Any ‘one size fits all’. I am a private tutor. I know all too well that each child has their own personalities, their own insecurities, their own history with school. Their own tastes, preferences and experiences. And my own experience keeps showing me that all of these need to be taken into account in order to achieve great results. Their results, actually: as success should also not be given a ‘one size fits all’ definition.

But here, you will find…

  • A return on experience about what worked, and what didn’t, for all the students I’ve supported over my 2500+ hours of tutoring. Lessons that I am sharing with you, and that I learned from experience, which you are welcome to comment and enrich. So we all grow together.

  • A critical approach to the societal debates regarding education, methods, pedagogical approaches and so on. As a private tutor, my work is not to find the approach that optimizes learning for a group of children. My work is to help each child individually get as close as possible to their full potential. And through Intelligences, to help you help your child reach their full potential.

  • And on a larger scale, a constant reminder that our differences allow us to grow and learn from each other. That with the right mindset, every single person you meet has the potential to teach you something.
